I AM…Woman… I AM

… Then it was that I was forty-years-old.. I had waited with great anticipation about becoming a forty-year-old woman… I envisioned a great big birthday party celebration. Alas, it was not meant to be so… …Instead, there were the barriers of COVID-19 which meant that my celebration would be nothing like I envisioned… still it taught me a lesson, to not lament over what could have been, nor even what should have been but instead, embrace and immerse in what is. The BIG party did not happen. However, my husband, children and siblings showed up BIG!

Summer is over… yes, I know, it officially ended in September. September 22^nd to be exact. For students, specifically adult students, the Fall semester also began in September. However, what makes October significant is the dreaded midterms, well it is dreaded for me. Followed by what I call, the midterm haze (I’ll tell you about that another time )…but let me go back just a little…

Live mindfully. Enjoy the happy moments. Smile in them. Lean back and rest in them. Think not of the next moment but only of the one you are currently in. When you are always on the go like I am, it’s hard at times to remember to live in each moment. Life and living it will escape us if we do not take time to mindfully live. I mean purposefully, deliberately without reservations, mindfully live life.

Do you support small businesses? I often wonder why it sometimes takes small businesses so long to get to the next level. .. The answer is simple, many people do not support small businesses. They are constantly chasing the big name brands, paying absurd amounts of money and at times for products that no longer have great quality.

As we approach the new year, I encourage women as I have my daughters and will continue to teach them: To love yourself more. To let go of any man who clearly shows that he will never be who you need, want and deserve. You are smart and beautiful. Be at peace in the place you are in. Often times we seek to find something or someone, outside of where we should never have ventured. Love does not always love you back. That does not mean however, that you should settle because you are in love for the sake of love. The love that reflects yours often is right there in your reach, ready and willing to reciprocate. You’ve just been too busy reaching for the wrong one.

Currently in one of my stand still moments and God is reminding me of how much I’ve accomplished, how many things I’ve ticked off the list of things to do…. and that it’s time for me to just be in His presence.

Have you ever had a time in life where you felt you were not moving at the speed you intended?…..Remember, in your stand still moments God is remolding you. He is removing all the worn out edges and replacing them with new… He is refilling your fuel, that you have so willingly given out. He is forcing you to take time to seek Him, to spend time with Him away from all your busyness.

If I could speak to the younger me, I would tell her to make sure every choice she makes is one that she wants to make, one that makes her happy. To consider others but not to the point where all the choices she makes in life are wrapped up in what others think and need. To enjoy her youth, to be easy on herself, to allow herself room to make mistakes and live. Live life freely. To breathe. Breathe in and out, breathe and live in every moment and not think so much about what has passed and what is to come. To relax, chill out and know it will all work out.

We live in a society where many of our men are unaware of exactly how to properly interact and care for a woman. I love my son. I will continue to teach him how to treat a woman, with equity, respect and honesty. To support her dreams. To give her the time she needs and desires. To communicate with her openly and to not shut her out. To show her not with only words, which will become empty words if not backed up by action, but to let his words reflect his actions and vise versa. To always treat her like the queen she is and never a second class woman. To love her fully, no left over, back-burner, second class love.

Very precious memories: The day I graduated from basic school (pre-school) on the left in Kingston, Jamaica . I received a copy of the story book, Little Red Riding Hood for being one of the top students with my graduation certificate. The day I graduated from grad school on the right in California, USA . I received a Phi Alpha Honor Society Cord and Medal for my GPA with my MSW degree. I remember both days very clearly. From humble beginnings. I was created to succeed. Never give up on your purpose in life.

I look back at my life and I am in awe. I spent the early years of my life living in what is known as a ghetto. It was far from the easiest of life and I understood early what it meant to be surrounded by hopelessness. What it felt like to be judged on where one resides. Classism at its finest. What it meant to be fearful of being robbed, raped or killed.
